Apple Launches iPad
Magical & Revolutionary Device at an Unbelievable Price
SAN FRANCISCO—January 27, 2010—Apple® today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch™ display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds— thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.
“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction. The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard. Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.
iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video. Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.
Apple also introduced a new version of iWork® for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas. The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.
iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.
iPad’s brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games. The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad’s larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.
iPad is powered by A4, Apple’s next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple’s advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.**
iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.
Continuing Apple’s dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.
Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad’s capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Pricing & Availability
iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (
Technology Fans Swarm Las Vegas, CES; Steve Ballmer to Keynote
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will give the keynote speech at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show later today. But first, hundreds of construction workers rush to finish building more than 2,500 exhibits, including one for Microsoft.
LAS VEGAS – Jan. 6, 2010 – Some 110,000 gadget-lovers are descending on this city for the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – the world’s largest consumer electronics trade show.
The four-day show officially kicks off tonight, when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer takes the stage at the Las Vegas Hilton to deliver his keynote speech. Last year, Ballmer assumed the role from Bill Gates, who had traditionally opened the show.
Last year’s show was beset with gloom as the U.S. economy seemed to be in free-fall. Attendees this year can take heart that the just-finished holiday shopping season saw surprisingly strong numbers.
Revenue from U.S. electronics sales between November 1 and December 24 rose 5.9 percent over the same period in 2008, estimates MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse, which tracks all forms of payment. CES-bound manufacturers hope consumers extend their holiday shopping season into the new year and buy some of the toys on display at the show, including TVs with 3-D displays, wafer-thin laptops, and a new generation of e-book readers.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

HOLIDAY SALES AND FORECAST, i-STAGE AND SIR KEN ROBINSON ROUND OUT DAY ONE AT CEA’S 2009 INDUSTRY FORUM
Consumer CE Holiday Spending to Increase; Regen Takes Home Top i-Stage Honors
Phoenix, AZ., October 20, 2009 – The definitive CE holiday sales forecast, the second annual i-Stage competition and a luncheon keynote by Sir Ken Robinson, acclaimed innovator and author, were among the hot happenings on Day One of the 2009 Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® Industry Forum. Designed to connect, educate and inform consumer technology professionals, CEA’s 2009 Industry Forum runs through Wednesday, October 21 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Shawn DuBravac, CEA's chief economist and director of research and Steve Koenig, CEA's director of industry analysis, kicked off the Industry Forum's programming with the popular Holiday Sales and Forecast presentation. DuBravac began with an economic overview and outlook, noting that despite a difficult year there are signs of optimism for the holidays.
Koenig announced CEA's research finding that consumers plan to spend more on consumer electronics this holiday season as technology plays a main role in holiday gift budgets. CEA found that consumers plan to spend an average of $222 on CE this holiday, a gain of eight percent over last year. The 16th Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns study tracks CE devices consumers intend to give as gifts, as well as those they hope to receive. Consumer electronics comprise four of the top 10 items on adults' holiday gift wish list, with computers and video games ranking two and three respectively, behind clothing.
“There are signs of optimism in our holiday forecast,” said DuBravac. “As the holiday approaches, consumer appetite for technology highlights the resiliency of the tech sector.”
Immediately following the Holiday Sales and Forecast presentation, CEA launched its second annual i-Stage competition where eleven finalists unveiled their products before a live audience and expert judges. Regen, the light powered personal and home electronics company, took the top prize for its ReNu personal solar power generation and storage system. Central to the ReNu system is the ReNu panel, a freestanding power module containing solar cells, a rechargeable battery and an intelligent user interface. The panel can be hung or placed in direct light to capture energy. When replenished by sunlight, a user can drop a ReNu panel into one of a series of Regen extensions to utilize the energy they have created.
As the winner, Regen will receive $40,000 dollars, a turn-key exhibit at the 2010 International CES®, the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow and the option of a booth at CES Unveiled in New York or Las Vegas. Regen was also chosen by the audience as the Fan Favorite and took home a bonus $2,500.
In addition, EnTourage Systems, Inc. placed second in the competition with its eDGe™ product and was awarded $7,500, as well as the option of a booth at CES Unveiled in New York or Las Vegas. The enTourage eDGe is the world’s first dualbook, combining the functions of an e-reader, netbook, notepad, and audio/video recorder and player in one.
Sir Ken Robinson, acclaimed innovator and author of the book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, addressed attendees during a luncheon keynote Monday afternoon. Robinson began by stating that imagination is the only thing that sets us apart and that we spend most of our lives suppressing it. He went on to tell the crowded room that in order to achieve success both professionally and personally that we cannot be afraid of making mistakes and must embrace the unknown of our imagination in the search of innovation. "We must make innovation a habit, not an accident and to do that we need to challenge the things we take for granted."
Sir Ken Robinson, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. He works with governments in Europe, Asia and the USA, with international agencies, Fortune 500 companies and some of the world’s leading cultural organizations.
Highlights for Tuesday’s Industry Forum will include: Economic Outlook-The Economy in CE Terms, CEA’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon Keynote with Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder, president and CEO, NVIDIA Corporation and The CE Hall of Fame Dinner where new inductees will be honored for their historic contributions to the consumer electronics industry. CEA'S INDUSTRY FORUM DELIVERS ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, RETAIL STRATEGY, GREEN TRENDS AND INDUSTRY ADVICE
Focus on CE Retail, 3-D and Green Technology, Social Media and Business Strategies
Phoenix, AZ., October 21, 2009 – The current and future state of CE retail, breakthrough technology innovation and social media trends were among the hot technology topics discussed on day two of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® Industry Forum. Designed to connect, educate and inform consumer technology professionals, CEA's 2009 Industry Forum wraps up today in Phoenix, Arizona with sessions presented by CEA's Small Business Council.
CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro opened Tuesday's annual member meeting luncheon with a recap of CEA's achievements throughout 2009. He outlined recent CEA market research, industry standards, policy initiatives, the launch of the Innovation Movement, the upcoming Greener Gadgets and CEA Line Shows in New York City and highlights of the 2010 International CES this January.
He then welcomed to the stage Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder, president and CEO of NVIDIA, who described his company's transformation over the past 15 years into the world leader in programmable graphics processing technologies and one of the semiconductor industry's largest fabless companies. Huang described the evolution of consumer technology over the past several decades and concluded that the Internet is today's killer application and that the next generation of innovation will bring the fidelity of the Web to consumers in increasingly convenient ways. Huang demonstrated NVIDIA's augmented reality technology and described the benefits it delivers to a variety of industries.
The conference session Charting the Churning Waters of CE Retail: Understanding How Changes in Channel Dynamics Affect the Industry featured CEA's Steve Koenig and TraQline's Eric Voyer outlining consumers' quest for value and the CE industry's need to determine what value means to their customers and then deliver it. Price deflation is rampant as the industry faces maturing markets. The presenters noted that discounters and online retailers are gaining market share. Koenig and Voyer discussed how the industry must safeguard innovation to help grow opportunities.
Another morning session, Economic Outlook: The Economy in CE Terms was moderated by CEA's Chief Economist Shawn DuBravac and included presentations from Dr. Tom Davis, corporate vice president, finance operations, Motorola and David Prince, economist, Intel Corp. The economists agreed that there is a global economic recovery happening. Prince said, “We anticipate three to five percent growth next year but it will take three years to get back to where we were.” Davis said, “Due to the fiscal stimulus, we will see an impact in 2010.”
DuBravac asked what the greatest risks are for next year. Davis answered, “The dollar going south is the thing I worry about – it is a key issue for me.” However, Prince said he didn't believe inflation would be a major concern in the short turn until unemployment has dropped. “GDP [growth] will have to be two to three percent.” Both economists were upbeat about the future. Davis said, “It is time to plan for the upturn.”
Next, CEA's Steve Koenig outlined the current state of 3-D TV in the session 3-D TV: The Next Big Thing for Displays? He discussed how the technology is demonstrating clear success at movie theatres and will gradually evolve into other facets of consumers' viewing habits. He noted how 3-D TV is similar to HDTV in that consumers are more likely to want it once they have truly experienced it. Koenig described how the consumer market is emerging for 3-D, particularly as Blu-ray continues to gain market share. In addition, Hollywood studies should have several titles ready by summer 2010. Generally, Koenig stated that the industry needs to have reasonable expectations for 3-D. It is gaining momentum but may not hit critical mass for several years.
Katie Fehrenbacher, editor, Earth2Tech moderated The 10 Things You Will be Doing in Five Years panel. The panel discussed the benefits of manufacturers establishing voluntary recycling program and how the industry is best suited in making products "greener”. The panel agreed that environmental education will be vital to all manufacturers going forward as well as the need for standards on how to define what is "green" and the criteria to make products more sustainable.
Steve Smith, editor-in-chief, TWICE magazine led the panel The Future of Retail during an afternoon session. The panel discussed ideas on strengthening the retail industry and experience in the coming years. The important role that social media will play between the consumer and the sale was a hot topic. The changing environment of retail was also discussed. Panelist Jeanette Howe, executive director, Specialty Electronics Nationwide summed it by saying, “It's not just simple retail anymore, it is project management; it's not just selling one thing but rather selling a product, the installation and the experience.”
CEA Chief Economist Shawn DuBravac gave a sneak peek of the top trends and technologies likely to prominently feature at the upcoming 2010 International CES. Interactive TV topped the list as a trend to watch with a variety of partnerships, widgets, menus and new ways to manage content across screens likely to generate buzz at the upcoming CES. 3D TV also will be a big trend, with the question of whether 3-D glasses or an alternative solution will emerge as the most viable option. E-books and Netbooks were also highlighted as top 2010 CES trends. DuBravac concluded by presenting several other technologies to watch, including iPod and iPhone software and applications, green technologies, digital health, augmented reality and further integration across the three screens (TV, PC and phone).
Jesse Thomas, CEO and founder of Jess3, moderated the session "Social Media and Business: Where's the Money?" with panelists Ben Grossman and Intel's Kelly Feller. The discussion focused on the best ways to measure social media, including free and paid monitoring services. Particular attention was paid to how social media can positively impact all parts of the sales cycle, especially the post-purchase evaluation cycle. Companies can make a name for themselves in the social media sphere by answering customer questions and building trust. Companies should weigh the cost it would take to produce a social media resource (ie. video) versus the opportunity it creates to impact consumer behavior. The panelists agreed that the next big trends include mobile/portable applications and Open I.D., the concept of having a single address book across a variety of networks that integrates the information and more easily allows you to connect with friends and communities.
Tuesday wrapped up with The CE Hall of Fame Dinner, honoring consumer electronics industry leaders who have made vital contributions to the products and services that consumers value and are vital to our nation and its economy. The CE Hall of Fame includes inventors, executives, engineers, retailers and journalists who are selected by an independent panel of industry judge. A full list of the 2009 Hall of Fame inductees can be found here .
Industry Forum concludes today with a host of sessions sponsored by CEA's Small Business Council. In today's first session Plain Talk on the Economy, Fox News Channel anchor Stuart Varney discussed the current global crisis and its unprecedented far-reaching scope. Varney outlined the existing financial situation and described what it means for individuals, their families and their businesses.
In the session, How to Use Challenging Times to Your Advantage, Bill Rancic, winner of Donald Trump's original Apprentice and star of A&E's new hit series, We Mean Business, leveraged his extensive entrepreneurial experiences and high-profile stint as the first-reigning Apprentice to offer insight into how businesses can use challenging times to their advantage. Rancic enthralled the crowd with examples of how the CE industry can make the most of these difficult times.
Luncheon Keynote speaker Ken Schmidt, dispensed his business advice by reminding attendees to “Make Some Noise.” Schmidt is a dynamic speaker who transformed the public perception of motorcycles when he was the branding guru for Harley Davidson. He entertained the crowd as he shared his advice of how businesses of any size and scope can - by focusing on understanding and harnessing the most basic drivers of human behavior - improve their competitiveness in even the most difficult marketing environments.

123rd AES CONVENTION A RESOUNDING SUCCESS Record Number of Attendees Swell Exhibition Hall & Events
NEW YORK: Record crowds of audio professionals filled exhibitor booths, Broadcast, Educational, Historical, Live Sound, Master Classes, Panels, Papers, Special Events, Tutorials and Workshops during the 123rd Audio Engineering Society Convention held in NYC’s Jacob Javits Convention Center Oct. 5 – 8. An attendee count of 20,674 visited over 445 exhibits and attended over 150 conference events, making this the largest AES Show in more than ten years.
AES executive director Roger Furness remarked: “This show’s attendance demonstrated the diversity of the audio industry. Engineers and producers walked the aisles alongside acclaimed design consultants, live sound engineers and broadcasters, students and musicians. AES is where advocates for improved audio meet – regardless of their area of specialty and professional status. This is exactly the unique, influential and powerful constituency that the AES is proud to represent.”
Attendance was further bolstered by expanded Broadcast, Historical, Platinum and Student events. Spirits were high and networking opportunities flourished. 123rd Convention Committee Chairman (and AES president-elect) Jim Anderson reports standing-room-only crowds at many of the Special Events. “The presentation by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was a particular highlight,” Anderson said. “With every seat filled and not a spare inch of leaning space, Emerick’s blend of technical insights and personal observances of the Fab Four constructing their masterwork were unforgettable.”
Broadcast Chair David Bialik considers the 123rd Convention “A total success, and the only audio conference to cover all the bases, from Considerations for Facility Design through the broadcast chain and to the receiver. Many of our events were standing room only, even our last session on Monday afternoon drew a good crowd,” he adds.
"AES was a convenient way for me to focus exclusively on my broadcast audio interests," says CBS Sports Director of Engineering Bruce Goldfeder. "Without the distraction of video, I could get all my questions answered, meet my colleagues from the other networks, and evaluate the various broadcast audio solutions all in one place."
"The 123rd AES show exceeded our expectations in both attendance and the quality and quantity of new products that used the show as a launch platform,” adds Bryan Bradley, Director, Pro Audio/Recording Merchandise, Guitar Center, Inc. “We are looking forward to continuing our association with the show and supporting its future growth."
Dave Shadoan of Sound Image remarked: “I enjoyed the show enormously. It was clearly well attended. It’s always good to see a number of old friends and to discover interesting new products.”
"From the moment the show opened to the time they rolled up the carpet, our traffic was overwhelmingly positive. Our user-base grew by 33% and the show provided an invaluable opportunity to meet face to face with our customers, talent, studios, producers and members of the press," concludes Gina Fant-Saez, CEO/co-founder eSession.
Platinum producer Phil Ramone summed up the event by stating, “This year’s AES in NY was better than ever. It’s always exciting to see the increased dedication to improving sound quality and advancing recording technology. AES just keeps growing and I’m glad to be a part of it!” "Clearly,” Roger Furness concludes, “many of those in New York shared Phil's enthusiasm and are looking forward to next year's show in San Francisco, October 2 – 5, 2008."

With all eyes focused on the economy, the question remains: How will the downturn impact streaming adoption in the corporate sector? Years of conclusive statistics show the ability to use streaming to offset travel costs, outsourced services costs, outsourced production costs, and the opportunity costs of removing employees from the office for meetings, and organizations have never been in a better position to showcase the ROI of their online communications programs. This session will feature firsthand examples from Fortune 500 organizations of how corporations save money by using streaming to support core communications, training, and educational programs.

Live Broadcasts and HD Video: Can Web Video Ever Scale to TV-Sized Audiences? (B203) 1:45 PM - 2:45 PM
Last year we saw a big uptick in the number of high-profile, large-scale live events on the web. Most weren’t offered in HD, and the debate still remains whether the internet is even capable of supporting live events with the kind of traffic seen from TV broadcasts. We’ll explore this discussion from all angles—technology, infrastructure, and quality—to get a feel for what the barriers are and when we can expect to see more large-scale live events delivered in HD.
Moderator: Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com Panel: Mark Taylor, VP, CMG Product and Strategy, Level 3 John Edwards, CEO, Move Networks Joe Inzerillo, SVP, MLB.com Tony Fernandez, VP, Technology, CBSSports.com
New Advertising Platforms and Networks (C203) 1:45 PM - 2:45 PM

In the past year, new ad platforms and networks have come to the market looking to solve problems such as targeting, analytics, syndication, and inventory management among others. This special session will feature demos from some new companies that will give you an insight into how these companies are looking to take content monetization to the next level.

Content Delivery Summit 09 Schedule - May 11, 2009 9:00 am Keynote Jeffrey Cohen, GM, Edge Computing Network, Microsoft
9:30 am Keynote Reza Hajebi, Infrastructure Strategy and Planning, Yahoo!
10:30 am A101: CDN Research Data: Market Sizing and Pricing Trends Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com
This presentation will present the latest data on the current revenues for the video content delivery market as well as expected growth forecasts relevant to both a poor and robust economy. Attendees will also learn the current pricing points for video delivery services and hear about the market drivers and trends that will determine what customers pay for video delivery services in the future. There will also be an extensive Q&A session, so this is your chance to ask any questions pertaining to your CDN contract and pricing terms.
B101: Enterprise CDN: Moving Past Consumer Applications Moderator: Eric Armstrong, President, Kontiki Bob Killmeier, VP, Corporate Communications IT Project Manager, Wachovia Brian Jensen, Managing Director, Global Corporate Communications, Cushman & Wakefield George Levar, Manager, Webcast and Digital Media, Accenture
Many enterprise corporations reply on their own internal CDN for essential video business communications. But with that comes various unique challenges deploying and managing video inside the firewall. A host of IT considerations—such as network capacity, access control, tracking, and myriad hardware and software issues—can make the integration complex. In this session you'll hear directly from some enterprises who are having success today and learn what video applications are being delivered across their network. Hear how can you leverage your existing infrastructure and learn some of the pros and cons of a “build versus buy” strategy.
11:30 am A102: The CDN Market Grows Up: Here Come The Telcos Moderator: Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com Andres Jordan, VP, Innovation, Deutsche Telekom North America Al DiGabriele, VP, Marketing, Global Crossing Gilles Sigouin, Senior Product Manager, IP and Content Delivery Services, Tata Communications Bill Wohnoutka, VP, CDN Sales, Level 3
In the past twelve months we've seen additional telcos like Deutsche Telekom, TeliaSonera, Pacnet and others enter the CDN market. What used to be a service only offered by pure-play CDNs is now starting to see a serious push by the major carriers with varying CDN strategies. But with the size of the video delivery market still small, what's in it for them? Can they truly achieve cost savings and pass them along to customers if they own the network? Can they focus enough to understand what it takes to run a CDN that does more than just push bits? Hear answers to these questions directly from the carriers and learn whether or not they plan to acquire smaller CDN players to speed their time to market.
B102: CDN Best Practices: From Contracts To Total Cost Of Ownership Moderator: Steve Lerner, Media Practice Director, RampRate Sourcing Advisors Rob Roskin, Manager, Online Operations and Emerging Technologies, MTV Networks Marc Goldberg, Head of Systems Operations, Tumblr Tal Saraf, GM, CloudFront, Amazon
As IP-based video traffic grows, the cost, quality, and operational issues associated with maintaining effective delivery continue to present a challenge to content owners. This session will discuss some of the nuts and bolts best practices for managing video content delivery today, and how best to handle it going forward in a world of traffic growth, changing vendor landscapes, and new consumer viewing platforms. Learn how to evaluate the total cost of ownership, the ways in which media formats affect cost, and how operations and contracts can be best structured to suit the customer.
12:15 pm Lunch Break
1:30 pm A103: CDN Technology Impacts: HTTP, HD, Multi-Bitrate, and Live Broadcasting Moderator: Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com Jim Thill, Senior Product Manager Silverlight, Microsoft Daniel Webster, SVP, Business Development and Live Media Services, The FeedRoom Jens Loeffler, Technical Evangelist, Flash Media Server, Adobe
With all the new and existing CDN technology in the market, which new features and functionality should you take advantage of? What's the value of multi-bitrate delivery, and what impact can it have on your content business? Will new services like HTTP-based Smooth Streaming reduce your bandwidth costs and enable live events to scale to larger audiences? What exactly constitutes HD video, and what's the total cost of ownership for deployment? These and other questions will be answered as we break down when these technologies should be used and what real impact they can have on your online video business.
B103: Monetization And Video Advertising: Waiting for the Tipping Point Moderator: Yaron Samid, Founder, NYVideo.org and Pando Networks John Cantarella, GM, TIME.com Markell Lambright, Project Manager, CBS Radio Suzanne Johnson, Sr. Industry Manager, Media and Entertainment, Akamai
For all the buzz about online video advertising, most content owners have yet to be able to turn their online video from cost center to profit center. Still, strong signals suggest that video monetization is around the corner, provided content owners don't pull back in today's tight economy. When will we reach that tipping point, and what direct cost and revenue impact will it have on the CDNs?
2:30 pm A104: CDN Demos: Reporting and Analytics Moderator: Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com James Segil, President, EdgeCast Networks Chris Bray, Sales Engineering Manager, Highwinds Roy Peterkofsky, Senior Director, Product Management, Skytide
One of the most frequent complaints by content owners is that most CDNs' reporting and analytics packages simply don't provide the data they really need. Many times these web-based reporting tools don't give out enough details on video consumption and typically don't provide the customer with much flexibility and opportunity for customization. Every CDN offers some degree of web-based reporting, but some offerings are clearly better than others. This special session will feature demos from different CDNs showcasing their reporting and analytics offerings and will conclude with a Q&A session surrounding the topic of online video reporting.
B104: CDN Economics: Consolidation And Evaluation Moderator: Colby Synesael, SVP, Equity Research, Kaufman Bros. James Henry, Senior Managing Director, Investment Banking, BankStreet Group Jonathan Seelig, Managing Director, Communications and Internet/Infrastructure, Globespan Capital Partners Blake Warner, Managing Director, Software, Media & Telecom Investment Banking, Thomas Weisel Partners David Aronoff, General Partner, Flybridge Capital
Analysts have widely speculated that we're going to soon see merger and acquisition activity grow in the CDN space, but to date, little has taken place. CDNs continue to raise large amounts of VC money, and each quarter more CDNs enter the market. What are the current valuations for CDN companies, and where will VC money be directed in the future? What types of deals are being pitched to bankers, which ones are they having the most success selling, and what are the characteristics of the ones they are searching for. Come hear speakers discuss the current M&A and VC environment and assess whether the economics of the CDN industry make it ripe for rapid consolidation.
3:30 pm A105: The CDN Ecosystem: Moving From Bit Delivery To Media Management Moderator: Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com Sam Farraj, AVP, AT&T Digital Media Solutions Bob Mason, Co-Founder, CTO, Brightcove Ron Berryman, SVP, GM, Fox Television Stations Greg Heil, Founder, President, Encoding.com
Content owners are now demanding that delivery networks do more than simply push bits across the Internet. Other pieces of the content ecosystem that enable the capture, transcoding, and management of video are the true solutions that allow for the monetization of content. But today, far too many CDN vendors simply try to sell a technical service at the lowest price, and three or four vendors still own most of the market share. This session will discuss how the CDN market needs to evolve to address customer demands and will offer thoughts on how CDNs are working to address this demand.
B105: CDN Demos: Next Generation Networks and Services Moderator: Steve Lerner, Media Practice Director, RampRate Sourcing Advisors Prabakar Sundarrajan, CTO, Co-Founder, Nokeena Networks David Stubenvoll, CEO & Co-Founder, Wowza Media Systems Ronni Zehavi, CEO, Co-Founder, Cotendo
Within the past few months, a host of new companies offering delivery services and solutions have launched in the market. But confusion still reigns as to exactly how their technology works, what their value propositions are, and how they differ from other solutions in the market. This special demo session will give three new companies in the space the chance to showcase their technology and answer questions about their solutions. Come see first-hand what they have to offer and bring any questions you may have, as these companies will join the moderator for a Q&A session after their demos.
4:30 pm A106: The Future of CDNs Moderator: Dan Rayburn, Executive Vice President, StreamingMedia.com Steve Kiene, Vice President of Engineering, Internap Network Services Corporation Mike Gordon, Co-Founder, Chief Strategy Officer, Limelight Networks Mike Flatin, Co-Founder, COO, BandCon David Rice, VP Business and Channel Development, Move Networks
This wrap-up session will be an open discussion highlighting some of the growing trends in the CDN market and examining how the business of content delivery will change over the coming years. Does cloud computing have any real impact? Will all video delivery eventually become commoditized? Will enough applications be built in the ecosystem to support rapid monetization? Come debate where the market is going, where the real opportunities are and what the disruptors will be, good and bad, for the CDN industry moving forward.
5:00 pm Reception
Washington, DC - Paradigm Research Group will hold its fifth X-Conference (Exopolitics Expo) April 17-19 at the Hilton Hotel in Gaithersburg, MD. This event is an integral part of PRG’s advocacy work aiming to change government policy toward extraterrestrial-related phenomena. Since 1947 the United States has imposed a "truth embargo" on formal acknowledgement of an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race. This engagement has been confirmed by a mountain of evidence compiled by hundreds of researchers over six decades.
X-Conference 2009 is hosted by former CNN news anchor, Cheryll Jones. Featured speakers this year include:
Dr. Edgar Mitchell - this author, explorer, founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and one of only 12 humans to set foot off the planet Earth (Apollo 14) triggered an international media storm in July of 2008 when many in a UK radio audience heard for the first time his assertions about what he has learned about an extraterrestrial presence in our skies ) Dr. Mitchell will give his most comprehensive lecture on the intersection of his life with these issues, the response he has received and his thoughts on the disclosure process and the possible new paradigm in a post-disclosure world.
Nick Pope - media coverage in the United Kingdom of the extraterrestrial/UFO issue has exploded over the past twelve months due to the timed release of thousands of documents and sighting reports by the British government into the public domain. These releases have generated hundreds of articles both in the UK and the United Kingdom. At the center of this storm is Nick Pope, a former Senior Executive Officer with the UK Ministry of Defence, who directly investigated the UFO issue while working for the MoD and is now a leading researcher and spokesperson. Nick will address the powerful events unfolding in his country.
Major Milton Torres: Nick Pope will be joined by USAF Major (ret.) Dr. Milton Torres who was featured in one of the MoD documents released last year. Major Torres was ordered to shoot down a UFO while on duty in the UK and is now publicly speaking to that extraordinary event.
Other speakers include: Stephen Bassett (Moderator); George Noory (Special Presentation); Dr. Roger Leir (Special Presentation); Col. John Alexander, PhD (Special Presentation - Debate with Stephen Bassett); Colin Andrews; Art Campbell with Manuel Kirklin; Richard Dolan; Graham Hancock; Paola Harris; Jeff Peckman; Michael Salla; PhD; Victor Viggiani; Alfred Webre, JD. Guest Activists: Dr. Joseph Buchman, Dr. Rebecca Hardcastle, Terri Mansfield, Robert Fleishcer (Germany), Angelika Whitecliff, Frederik Uldall (Denmark).
All members of the U. S. Congress have received invitations to send representatives to X-Conference 2009.
A post-conference press event will be held at the National Press Club, 14th and F Streets, NW, Washington, DC on Monday, April 20, at 10 am. Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Nick Pope, Major Milton Torrres and other speakers will have announcements and take questions on the most important issue of our time.

Newest and Hottest Products in Children’s Entertainment Marketplace Featured at Largest Toy Trade Show in the Western Hemisphere February 15-18 at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City
NEW YORK, February 15, 2009 – “High play value” toys that offer hour after hour of entertainment for the money, toys that will motivate couch-potato kids to “Get Up & Move It, Move It!”, larger-than-life entertainment and movie-licensed toys, and more and more toys that incorporate a high-tech or virtual world component – these are among the very hottest toy trends for 2009 that can be found at the 106th American International Toy Fair® in New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
While toy manufacturers from around the globe are here unveiling the new and innovative products destined for children’s holiday wish lists later this year, other companies are commemorating major milestones for their toys and games. Can it be that Barbie is celebrating her 50th birthday and G.I. Joe is still gearing up for action at age 45? The Pink Panther and Nerf are celebrating 40th anniversaries this year and new generations keep joining in the fun as Candyland turns 60.
Toy Fair, which runs February 15-18, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and at additional showroom locations in New York City, showcases the excitement, innovation and inspiration behind the $67 billion global ($21.6 billion U.S.) toy industry. With “Inspiring Growth” as its theme, this year’s show features more than 20,000 attendees, 1,100+ exhibitors, 16,000 retail buyers from 89 countries, more than 361,000 square feet of exhibit space, as well as 100,000 products – over 7,000 of which have never before been seen anywhere in the world.
Toy Fair is an annual event that is owned and operated by the Toy Industry Association (TIA).
“Toy Fair is the premier meeting place for manufacturers, retailers, importers, licensors and sales representatives from around the world,” said Carter Keithley, TIA president. “Toy Fair is the most fun you can have in a convention center and we’re as excited about the new toys of 2009 as the kids will be. But Toy Fair isn’t all about play, it’s also an opportunity for toy companies to extend their reach beyond traditional retail channels, and to build their brands and grow their business.”

Photos grab moment.
Videos/movies tell stories.
The challenge is to figure out which one the market will want (or get) in the next 3, 5, 10 years.
That sorta sums up the annual information-rich 6Sight Conference in Monterey, CA.
During the dinner reception at the Monterey Aquarium, Alexis Gerard (founder of Future Image) noted that the content industry is growing in both depth and breadth.
“There are some outstanding solutions being introduced for professional and prosumer photographers and videographers,” he commented. “But the real excitement is the rapid improvement of and merging of imaging and communications technologies that is being put into use by normal people around the globe.
“Photos and videos are really the universal language that make ideas and things easy to understand no matter where you work, live or relax,” he added.
